The SDG Olympiad 2024

A global competition that empowers young students to tackle sustainable health and environmental challenges that affect their communities.

About

Olympiads are competitions that help young people boost their knowledge, skills, and abilities in a particular field. There are lots of them in traditional fields like mathematics, physics and chemistry. The SDG Olympiad is a new variant, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on team-based projects that aim to have a practical social and environmental impact.

The SDG Olympiad is inspired by the SDG Summer Schools organized by University of Geneva since 2016. In 2023, a pilot program for the SDG Olympiad tested the SDG Olympiad concept at five universities in Bangkok, Geneva, Lagos, Nairobi and Paris, each of which held and SDG Summer School. In 2024, the goal is to have 10 universities participate on five continents, with SDG Summer Schools or similar events that will select top teams for an SDG Award Ceremony in Paris in September, just after the Olympic games in that city. The map below shows the cities and universities that have confirmed events for the 2024 SDG Olympiad.

This year topic

The theme of the SDG Olympiad in 2024 is planetary health. Climate change is having an impact on the heath of ecosystems and human beings. Planetary heath explores the links between the changes on the environment and the effects on the living systems. This covers everything from human health challenges, such as treating infectious diseases, to climate resilience and adaptation challenges facing vulnerable communities.
